PTE Reading Question Types | Complete Guide & Strategies

PTE Reading Question Types

The PTE Reading section lasts approximately 29–30 minutes and contains five different question types. Understanding the weight of each task is essential for effective Time Management.

1. Reading & Writing: Fill in the Blanks

EXTREMELY HIGH WEIGHT

You are presented with a text containing several gaps. For each gap, you must select the correct word from a drop-down menu.

  • Skills: Grammar, Vocabulary, and Collocations.
  • Strategy: This task contributes significantly to your Writing score as well as Reading. Practice specifically with Reading Practice 2 to master collocations.

2. Multiple Choice, Multiple Answer

LOW WEIGHT NEGATIVE MARKING

After reading a text, you must select all correct responses from a list of options.

  • Warning: You lose 1 point for every incorrect option selected.
  • Strategy: If you are not 100% sure about a second answer, choose only one to avoid losing points.

3. Re-order Paragraphs

MEDIUM WEIGHT

Several text boxes appear in random order. You must drag and drop them to restore the original logical flow.

  • Strategy: Focus on finding "pairs." Look for pronouns (he, she, they) or transition words (however, therefore) that link one box to another.
  • Practice: Focus on logic drills in our PTE Test Exercises.

4. Reading: Fill in the Blanks (Drag & Drop)

HIGH WEIGHT

A text appears with gaps. A list of words is provided at the bottom; you must drag the correct words into the gaps.

  • Skills: Primarily Vocabulary and Context.
  • Strategy: Use parts of speech to narrow down choices. If a gap follows "a" or "the," look for a noun. Sharpen these skills in Reading Practice 1.

5. Multiple Choice, Single Answer

LOW WEIGHT

Read a text and answer one multiple-choice question by selecting one option.

  • Strategy: Do not spend more than 1.5 minutes here. These questions carry the least points; save your time for the Fill in the Blanks.
