PTE Time Management
In the PTE Academic, the clock is just as important as your English. Many students lose points simply because they run out of time. Effective PTE Time Management ensures you reach the high-value questions at the end of each section.
1. Speaking & Writing: Individual vs. Overall Timers
This section uses a mix of individual question timers and a total section timer.
- Speaking: Each question has its own countdown. Once the progress bar finishes, you have 3 seconds to start speaking or the microphone closes.
- Writing: Tasks like Essay Writing have a strict 20-minute limit. You cannot carry over unused time to the next question.
- Pro Tip: Don't wait for the timer to end. If you finish speaking, click "Next" immediately to stay in the rhythm.
2. Reading: The Danger Zone
The Reading section has a single timer for the whole part. This is where most students fail to finish.
| Task Type | Recommended Time |
|---|---|
| Fill in the Blanks (Both types) | 2 Minutes per question |
| Re-order Paragraphs | 2 Minutes per question |
| Multiple Choice (Single/Multiple) | 1 Minute per question |
Practice your speed with Reading Practice 1 and Reading Practice 2.
3. Listening: Saving the Best for Last
The Listening section is unique because the most important task, Write from Dictation, is at the very end.
- Summarize Spoken Text: You have 10 minutes per question. Use all of it to check spelling and grammar.
- The Rest: For Multiple Choice and Select Missing Word, answer quickly (within 30 seconds of the audio ending).
- The Goal: You MUST save at least 5-6 minutes on the overall clock for the final Write from Dictation questions.
4. Training Your Internal Clock
You cannot master timing by reading about it; you must practice it.
- Use PTE Mini Tests to practice individual section timing.
- Take Full Practice Tests to build the stamina required for the 2-hour session.
- Apply specific PTE Strategies to answer faster using patterns rather than reading every word.
5. Quick Links
- Review the PTE Test Format for exact timings.
- Check PTE Tips for speed hacks.
- Follow the PTE Training Plan to build your pace over 6 weeks.
