PTE Score Explained | Understanding the AI Scoring System

PTE Score Explained

The PTE Academic uses a unique automated scoring system based on the Global Scale of English. Understanding how you are scored is the first step to achieving your dream result.

1. The Global Scale of English (GSE)

Your PTE result is not a percentage. It is a score on a scale of 10 to 90 points.

  • 10 Points: The lowest possible score (equivalent to no English skills).
  • 90 Points: The highest possible score (equivalent to a native speaker level).
  • Overall Score: This is based on your performance across all test tasks.

2. Integrated Scoring: A Unique Feature

Unlike other tests, PTE tasks often contribute to two different communicative skills at once.

  1. Read Aloud: Contributes to both Speaking and Reading scores.
  2. Summarize Spoken Text: Contributes to both Listening and Writing scores.
  3. Write from Dictation: Contributes heavily to both Listening and Writing scores.

This is why a high-level PTE Strategy is necessary to ensure you don't neglect cross-scoring tasks.

3. Score Comparison Table

How does a PTE score compare to IELTS or TOEFL? Here is a general breakdown:

PTE Score IELTS Equivalent English Level
79 - 90 8.0 - 9.0 Superior
65 - 78 7.0 - 7.5 Proficient
50 - 64 6.0 - 6.5 Competent

4. Enabling Skills & Performance

Your score report also tracks specific skills that help the AI determine your overall level:

  • Oral Fluency: How smooth and natural your speech is.
  • Pronunciation: How easily a computer can understand your words.
  • Spelling & Grammar: Accuracy in your written responses.
