PTE Answer Short Question | Practice & Strategies

PTE Answer Short Question

Answer Short Question is the final task of the Speaking section. It requires you to provide a one-word or short-phrase answer to a general knowledge or common-sense question. It contributes points to both Speaking and Listening.

1. Task Format & Timing

You will hear 5–6 questions. Each question is followed by a short audio gap where you must provide your answer.

  • Immediate Response: Start speaking as soon as the status changes to "Recording."
  • No Hesitation: If you don't know the answer, it’s better to say something relevant or simply click "Next."
  • Wait Time: If you don't speak within 3 seconds, the microphone will close.

2. Key Strategies for Success

While the weight is lower than "Read Aloud," these points can be the difference between a 78 and a 79.

  • Keep it Short: The AI is looking for specific keywords. A single word is often better than a full sentence.
  • Articles Don't Matter: Saying "the sun" or just "sun" are both usually accepted as correct.
  • Plurals Matter: Listen carefully to whether the question implies a singular or plural answer.
  • Don't Overthink: Most questions are based on everyday logic (e.g., "What do you call a person who treats sick people?").

3. Vocabulary & Common Themes

Questions typically fall into these categories:

  1. Academic Tools: Lab equipment, stationery, libraries.
  2. Nature & Time: Seasons, solar system, calendars.
  3. Professionals: Doctors, architects, historians.
  4. Daily Life: Transport, household items, food.

5. Moving to the Next Module

Completion of this task marks the end of the Speaking section. Next, you will move directly into PTE Writing. Be prepared to shift your mindset from oral fluency to grammatical precision.
