PTE Listening Fill in the Blanks | Spelling & Accuracy Tips

PTE Listening Fill in the Blanks

In Listening Fill in the Blanks, you are given a transcript with several missing words. As the audio plays, you must identify and type the missing words exactly as they are spoken.

1. The "Golden Rule" of LFIB

Most students lose marks not because they didn't hear the word, but because of spelling errors or missing suffixes.

  • Listen for the 's': Pay extremely close attention to plural vs. singular forms (e.g., "student" vs. "students").
  • Listen for the 'ed': Differentiate between past and present tense (e.g., "develop" vs. "developed").
  • Capitalization: If a blank starts a sentence or is a proper noun, it must be capitalized.

2. Tactical Execution

Success requires a method that doesn't distract you from the audio flow.

  1. The "Notepad" Method: Use your erasable booklet to write down the words as you hear them. Do not try to type directly into the boxes while the audio is playing; you will likely miss the next word.
  2. Shorthand: Use your own code (e.g., "comm" for "communication"). You can fix the full spelling after the audio ends.
  3. Proofread: Once the audio stops, read the whole paragraph. Does your word make grammatical sense? (e.g., "The cat sat on the mat" makes sense; "The cat sat on the mats" might not if the previous sentence was singular).

3. Common Spelling Traps

Watch out for words that sound similar but are spelled differently:

  • Homophones: Council/Counsel, Principal/Principle, Complement/Compliment.
  • Silent Letters: Government, Environment, Knowledge, Psychologist.
  • Double Letters: Accommodation, Occurrence, Necessary, Tomorrow.

5. Next Steps

After finishing the blanks, you'll move to Highlight Incorrect Words. For a full score breakdown of how listening tasks help your writing, visit PTE Score Explained.

Don't forget to practice the most important task: Write from Dictation.
