PTE Academic Tips & Tricks

The PTE is a computer-based test, which means you aren't just testing your English—you are testing your ability to interact with an AI algorithm. Use these expert tips to align your performance with what the computer is looking for.

Speaking Tip

Fluency Over Perfection

The AI values "Oral Fluency" more than "Content" in many tasks. If you make a mistake, do not stop and do not correct yourself. Keep a steady, moderate pace like a newsreader.

  • Maintain a constant flow in Describe Image using a template.
  • Never pause for more than 2 seconds, or the microphone will close.
Writing Tip

The Power of Grammar & Spelling

In tasks like Essay Writing, the computer checks for structural accuracy. Use simple, clear sentences rather than overly complex ones where you might make a grammar error.

  • Always leave 2 minutes at the end of every writing task to check for typos.
  • Be consistent: Use either Color/Center (US) or Colour/Centre (UK), but never both.
Reading Tip

Context is King

For "Fill in the Blanks," look at the words before and after the gap. Often, the answer is determined by Collocations (words that naturally go together).

  • Practice common word pairings at Reading Practice 1.
  • Manage your time! Don't spend more than 2 minutes on a single reading screen.
Listening Tip

Protect the End of the Test

The most important task, Write from Dictation, is the very last thing you do. Many students fail because they run out of time before they reach it.

  • Move quickly through Multiple Choice questions; they are worth very few points.
  • Ensure you have 5-7 minutes left when you reach the final section.

General Exam Day Advice

  1. Check your Microphone: During the equipment check, speak clearly and listen to the playback. Ensure there is no "puffing" sound from your breath.
  2. Focus on High-Value Tasks: Prioritize Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, and Write from Dictation. These "big three" carry the most weight.
  3. Don't Panic: If you miss a word in a recording, let it go. The next question is a fresh start.
