TOEIC - Test of English for International Communication
The Global Benchmark for Corporate, Business & Workplace English Proficiency
1. What is the TOEIC Test?
The TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication), developed by ETS, is the leading global standard for measuring business English skills in international workplace environments. Unlike academic exams like TOEFL or IELTS Academic, TOEIC evaluates real-world professional situations—such as corporate meetings, business travel, email exchanges, teleconferences, and client presentations.
- Global Corporate Benchmark: Trusted by over 14,000 multinational companies, government agencies, and universities in more than 160 countries.
- Career & Recruitment Essential: Widely used for employment recruitment, internal promotions, executive management benchmarks, and overseas assignments.
- Flexible Testing Modules: Choose between the core Listening & Reading test or the complementary Speaking & Writing test.
2. Understand the Test Formats
TOEIC offers two separate assessment components that measure specific workplace communication skills:
Listening & Reading (~2 Hours)
Paper or computer-based multiple-choice exam:
- Listening (45 Mins, 100 Qs): Photographs, question-responses, conversations, and short talks.
- Reading (75 Mins, 100 Qs): Incomplete sentences, text completion, and single/multiple reading passages.
- Scoring Scale: 10 to 990 points (5 to 495 points per section).
Speaking & Writing (~1.5 Hours)
Computer-delivered assessment:
- Speaking (20 Mins, 11 Tasks): Reading aloud, describing pictures, answering questions, proposing solutions, expressing opinions.
- Writing (60 Mins, 8 Tasks): Sentence building based on pictures, responding to email requests, writing opinion essays.
- Scoring Scale: 0 to 200 points per module.
3. TOEIC Score Interpretation & CEFR Mapping
Scores correspond to specific workplace capability levels and map directly to European CEFR standards:
- 785 – 990 Points (CEFR B2 to C1) Professional Fluency: Can communicate effectively in almost all professional situations, negotiate complex contracts, and deliver corporate presentations.
- 550 – 780 Points (CEFR B1 to B2) Working Proficiency: Satisfies routine workplace demands, understands business emails, and handles simple negotiations.
- 225 – 540 Points (CEFR A2 to B1) Elementary Proficiency: Can handle basic workplace interactions and simple instructions, but requires language support for complex tasks.
