PTE Describe Image | Templates & Speaking Strategies

PTE Describe Image

In Describe Image, you are shown a visual (graph, chart, map, or process) and have 40 seconds to explain it. The secret to this task isn't data accuracy—it's Oral Fluency. Using a template allows you to speak without hesitation.

1. The Task Format

You will see 3–4 images in the test. You have 25 seconds to study the image and 40 seconds to record your answer.

  • Don't Be Too Technical: The AI isn't checking if your numbers are 100% exact; it's checking if you are speaking clearly and continuously.
  • Capture Keywords: Read the title, the X and Y axes, and the labels. Mention at least 4–5 key terms from the image.
  • Timing: Aim to speak for 30–35 seconds. Don't stop too early, but don't get cut off mid-sentence at 40 seconds.

2. A Universal Template

You can use this structure for almost any image (Bar, Line, Pie, or Table):

"The given image provides information about [Title]. It is clear from the image that there are several different trends. The highest value is mentioned as [Keyword/Number], whereas the lowest value is [Keyword/Number]. Furthermore, we can see that [Keyword] and [Keyword] also play an important role. In conclusion, the image is very informative and provides a clear overview of [Title]."

Practice using this template with Describe Image Practice Sets.

3. Scoring Strategy

  • Fluency is King: If you get stuck on a number, say "a significant amount" and keep going. Never pause to think.
  • Pronunciation: Speak clearly and at a moderate volume. Don't rush; let the AI capture your syllables.
  • Content: Mention the "maximum" and "minimum" points. These are easy keywords that the AI often looks for in this task.

5. Moving Forward

Once you've mastered images, the next step is PTE Re-tell Lecture, which uses similar template strategies. For a complete preparation routine, follow our PTE Training Plan.
