PTE Write from Dictation | The Most Important Task

PTE Write from Dictation

Write from Dictation (WFD) is the final task of the PTE Academic. You hear a sentence and must type it exactly into the box. Each correct word earns you 1 point. With 3–4 sentences in this task, WFD can provide up to 25% of your total Writing score.

Why this Task is Critical

WFD is the "King of PTE." Because it is at the very end of the test, many students run out of time and miss these questions entirely. This is a fatal mistake.

  • Listening Points: Every word you hear correctly counts.
  • Writing Points: Every word you spell correctly counts.
  • Penalty: There is no negative marking for adding words!

1. The "Extra Word" Strategy

If you are unsure whether a word was singular or plural, or if it was "the" or "a," use the extra word hack:

Example: If you aren't sure if the speaker said "The student" or "The students," type:
"The student students arrived at the lab."
The AI will recognize the correct word and ignore the incorrect one. This works for spelling variations too!

2. Tactical Execution

  1. Note-Taking: Use your erasable booklet. Write the first letter of each word as you hear it (e.g., "T c i s o t t" for "The class is starting on the Tuesday").
  2. Initial Caps & Punctuation: Start every sentence with a Capital Letter and end with a Full Stop.
  3. Spelling Consistency: Stick to one spelling convention (British or American).
  4. Verification: Re-read your sentence. Does it have a subject, a verb, and make logical sense?

3. Time Management

You must save at least 5 to 7 minutes on the overall Listening timer for these 3–4 questions. Do not waste time on Multiple Choice; move quickly to ensure you reach the end.

5. Closing the Test

Write from Dictation is the final hurdle. Once you have submitted your final sentence, your PTE exam is complete! Review your overall journey on our PTE Overview or prepare for your next attempt with our 6-Week Plan.
