PTE Summarize Spoken Text | Templates & Listening Tips

PTE Summarize Spoken Text

In Summarize Spoken Text, you listen to a short lecture and write a summary of 50–70 words. This task is unique because it has its own 10-minute timer per question, giving you ample time to check your grammar and spelling.

1. The Scoring Rules

The AI evaluates your response based on five criteria, each worth 2 points:

  • Content: Did you capture the main idea and key supporting points?
  • Form: Is your response between 50 and 70 words? (Very strict!)
  • Grammar: Are your sentences structured correctly?
  • Vocabulary: Did you use appropriate academic terms from the audio?
  • Spelling: Is your spelling consistent (e.g., all British or all American)?

2. A Proven Writing Template

Using a template ensures you stay within the word count and maintain grammatical flow:

"The lecture provided a comprehensive overview of [Main Topic]. Initially, the speaker highlighted the significance of [Keyword 1] and [Keyword 2]. Furthermore, it was suggested that [Keyword 3] plays a crucial role in [Keyword 4]. In addition, the information indicated that [Keyword 5] is essential for understanding [Keyword 6]. Overall, the discussion emphasized the impact of [Main Topic] on contemporary society."

Practice this structure with Listening Practice Sets.

3. The 10-Minute Strategy

  1. Minutes 0-2: Listen actively. Write down as many nouns and short phrases as possible.
  2. Minutes 2-5: Draft your summary using the template. Ensure you hit the 50-70 word target.
  3. Minutes 5-9: Review. Check every single word for spelling errors. Look for subject-verb agreement.
  4. Minute 10: Click "Next." Do not leave the screen early—use the full time to polish your writing.

5. Next Task

Once you finish the summarized texts, you will move to the remaining listening questions where the timer is shared. Be sure to check the Write from Dictation guide, as it is the most critical task in the section.
