PTE Repeat Sentence | Strategies & Practice Drills

PTE Repeat Sentence

Repeat Sentence is a powerhouse task. It contributes roughly 30% to your Speaking score and 20% to your Listening score. Your goal is to repeat the audio exactly as you heard it, maintaining the same rhythm and intonation.

1. How the Task Works

You will hear a short sentence (3–9 seconds long). As soon as the audio ends, the microphone opens, and you must repeat it immediately.

  • No Beep: There is no warning beep. Watch the "Recording" status on the screen.
  • The 3-Second Rule: If you do not speak for 3 seconds, the microphone turns off and you lose the question.
  • Quantity: You will face 10–12 of these questions in the test.

2. Key Strategies for Success

Success in this task depends more on Fluency than on getting every single word correct.

  • Focus on Phrasing: Listen to how the speaker groups words together. Repeat those groups (chunks) rather than individual words.
  • Don't Self-Correct: If you miss a word or mispronounce something, keep going. Correcting yourself destroys your fluency score.
  • Prioritize Fluency: It is better to speak 70% of the sentence smoothly than 100% of the sentence with hesitations and "umms."
  • Mimic the Stress: Try to copy the speaker's emphasis on certain words to help the AI recognize your pronunciation.

3. Improving Your Short-Term Memory

If you struggle to remember long sentences, try these tactical approaches:

  1. The "First Letter" Method: Jot down the first letter of each word as you hear it (e.g., "The cat sat" becomes "T C S").
  2. Visualization: Close your eyes and create a mental picture of the action described in the sentence.
  3. The 50% Rule: If the sentence is too long, focus on capturing the first half perfectly and speak it with high confidence.
