PTE Listening Multiple Choice | Strategies & Practice

PTE Listening Multiple Choice

The Multiple Choice tasks test your ability to understand the main idea, supporting details, or the speaker's tone. There are two types: Multiple Answers and Single Answer.

1. Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers

You will listen to a recording and select all the correct options from a list. There is usually more than one correct answer.

CAUTION: Negative Marking applies here! You get +1 for every correct choice, but -1 for every incorrect choice. If you are not 100% sure, do not guess. Selecting only one correct answer is better than selecting one correct and one incorrect (which results in 0 points).
  • Read the Prompt: Skim the question and options before the audio starts to know what to listen for.
  • Listen for Synonyms: The audio rarely uses the exact words found in the options.
  • Elimination: Cross out options that contradict the audio as you listen.

2. Multiple Choice, Single Answer

This task is simpler as there is only one correct answer and no negative marking.

  • Identify the Focus: Is the question asking for the "Main Purpose," a "Specific Detail," or an "Inference"?
  • Stay to the End: Speakers often change their point or add a "but" at the end of the clip.
  • Guessing: Since there is no penalty, never leave this question blank.

3. Time Management Strategy

Multiple choice questions are low-weight tasks. Do not spend too much time on them.

  1. Answer within 30–45 seconds of the audio finishing.
  2. Remember that the most important task, Write from Dictation, is at the very end of the section.
  3. If you are stuck, pick your best guess and move on to save time for higher-scoring questions.

5. Next Tasks

After Multiple Choice, you will encounter tasks like Fill in the Blanks and Highlight Incorrect Words. Both are critical for your final score.
