PTE Highlight Incorrect Words | Strategy & Practice

PTE Highlight Incorrect Words

In Highlight Incorrect Words, you follow a transcript while listening to an audio clip. Some words in the text differ from what the speaker says. You must click on these words to highlight them.

1. The Scoring Trap

CAUTION: Negative Marking applies! You receive +1 point for each correct word highlighted, but -1 point for each incorrect click. If you are unsure, do not click. Your total score for an item cannot go below zero.
  • Focus: This task rewards high concentration. A single second of distraction can cause you to miss two errors.
  • Cross-Scoring: This task is vital because it provides points for your Reading score as well as Listening.

2. Tactical Execution

The secret is "Moving Cursor" tracking. Follow these steps for 100% accuracy:

  1. Preparation: You have 10 seconds before the audio starts. Skim the first two lines to get the context and speaker's pace.
  2. The Tracking Method: Move your mouse cursor along the lines of text as the speaker talks. Keep the cursor exactly on the word being spoken.
  3. The Click: If you hear a difference, click immediately and keep moving. Do not stop to think about why it was different.
  4. Common Variations: The AI often swaps words for synonyms (e.g., "huge" instead of "large") or words with similar sounds (e.g., "affect" instead of "effect").

3. Important Tips

  • Don't Look Back: If you realize you missed a word three lines ago, ignore it. Focusing on the past will make you miss the future.
  • Ignore Punctuation: The task only concerns the words themselves, not commas or full stops.
  • Watch the Endings: Often, the only difference is a suffix like "-ing," "-ed," or "-s." Listen carefully to word endings.

5. The Final Countdown

Highlight Incorrect Words is usually the second-to-last task. As soon as it's over, you face the most critical part of the entire PTE exam: Write from Dictation. Ensure you have at least 5 minutes left on your clock!
