PTE Listening | Strategies, Question Types & Practice

PTE Listening Overview

The Listening section is the final part of the PTE Academic exam, lasting 30–43 minutes. It tests your ability to understand spoken English in various academic and social contexts through 8 different question types.

The Most Critical Tasks

Not all listening tasks are created equal. To secure a high score, you must prioritize these high-weight sections:

1. Summarize Spoken Text

Listen to a short lecture and write a 50–70 word summary. This contributes to both Listening and Writing scores.

2. Write from Dictation

The most important task in the whole exam. Type a short sentence exactly as you hear it. Every correct word earns a point.

All Listening Question Types

  • Summarize Spoken Text: High weight, integrated scoring.
  • Multiple Choice (Multiple Answer): Negative marking applies.
  • Fill in the Blanks: High focus on spelling accuracy.
  • Highlight Correct Summary: Select the best summary of the audio.
  • Multiple Choice (Single Answer): Quick comprehension check.
  • Select Missing Word: Predict the end of a sentence.
  • Highlight Incorrect Words: Fast-paced reading-listening integration.
  • Write from Dictation: Critical for 79+ scores.
Pro Tip: Unlike the Speaking section, the Listening section has a total timer for all questions (except Summarize Spoken Text). You must manage your own time to ensure you reach the "Write from Dictation" questions at the very end.
