IELTS General Tips
Practical tips for IELTS General Training reading, writing, listening and speaking.
IELTS General Training is often used for migration, work and practical English requirements. The test is not only about knowing English. You also need timing, task awareness and a calm exam strategy.
IELTS General Training: What to Remember
IELTS General Training is practical, but it still needs precise answers and good organisation.
| Skill | Main challenge | Best tip |
|---|---|---|
| Reading | Finding exact information quickly. | Scan for evidence before choosing an answer. |
| Writing Task 1 | Choosing the correct letter tone. | Decide: formal, semi-formal or informal. |
| Writing Task 2 | Developing ideas clearly. | Explain your point and give a relevant example. |
| Listening | Following details while the audio continues. | Read ahead and predict the type of answer. |
| Speaking | Speaking naturally under pressure. | Answer directly, then add a reason or example. |
IELTS General Reading Tips
General Reading uses practical texts, but many answers depend on small details.
1Do Not Read Everything Slowly
In Section 1, you often need to find names, dates, times, prices and conditions. Scan first, then read the exact sentence carefully.
- Tip: Find the answer area before reading every word.
2Watch for Small Changes
Wrong answers often change one small detail: morning becomes afternoon, monthly becomes annual, or must becomes may.
- Tip: Underline the exact evidence in the text.
3Save Time for Section 3
Section 3 is longer and more complex. Do not lose too much time on easier practical texts at the beginning.
- Tip: Move on if you are stuck. Return later if possible.
IELTS General Writing Tips
General Writing needs clear tone, strong paragraphing and complete task response.
1Task 1: Choose the Right Tone
Before you write, decide who receives the letter. This controls your greeting, vocabulary and ending.
- Formal: Dear Sir or Madam / Yours faithfully
- Semi-formal: Dear Mr Brown / Yours sincerely
- Informal: Dear Sarah / Best wishes
2Task 1: Answer All Bullet Points
If the question gives three bullet points, each one should be clearly answered. Missing one bullet point can reduce your score.
- Tip: Use one paragraph for each main bullet point.
3Task 2: Develop Your Ideas
A good essay does not only list opinions. It explains why the opinion is reasonable.
- Simple structure: Point, explanation, example, result.
IELTS Listening Tips
The Listening test is the same for Academic and General Training.
1Read Ahead
Use the preparation time to read the questions. Predict whether you need a name, number, place, date, noun, verb or adjective.
2Expect Corrections
Speakers often correct themselves: "Let's meet on Tuesday. No, sorry, Wednesday." The final answer is usually the corrected information.
3Check Spelling and Plurals
A small spelling mistake can make an answer wrong. Listen for singular and plural endings.
- Examples: room / rooms, guest / guests, day / days.
IELTS Speaking Tips
The Speaking test is also the same for Academic and General Training.
1Do Not Memorise Full Answers
Memorised answers often sound unnatural. Prepare useful phrases and ideas, but answer the real question.
2Extend Short Answers
Give a direct answer, then add a reason, example or contrast.
- Short: I prefer travelling by train.
- Better: I prefer travelling by train because it is usually more relaxing than driving, especially on longer journeys.
3Use Natural Repair Phrases
It is normal to pause or correct yourself. Use simple phrases to stay fluent.
- Phrase: What I mean is...
- Phrase: Let me put it another way...
- Phrase: I suppose it depends on the situation.
