TOEFL Speaking Task 1 | Independent Speaking Guide

TOEFL Speaking Task 1: Independent Speaking

Task 1 is the only independent speaking task. You are asked to give your opinion on a familiar topic. There is no right or wrong answer; the examiners are evaluating your ability to speak clearly and coherently.

Preparation Time: 15 seconds

Speaking Time: 45 seconds

Strategy for Success

  • Make a Quick Decision: Don't waste your 15 seconds of prep time trying to find the "best" answer. Pick the one you can explain most easily.
  • State Your Opinion Clearly: Start with a direct answer to the prompt.
  • Support with Reasons: Use 1 or 2 specific reasons.
  • Provide an Example: A personal anecdote or specific scenario is the easiest way to fill your 45 seconds naturally.

Task 1 Template

I personally agree/disagree that [Restate the prompt topic]. My main reason for this is that [Reason 1]. For example, [Specific personal experience or detailed example]. Another reason is that [Reason 2]. Because of this, [Brief concluding sentence/summary].

Example Prompt

"Some people prefer to work on their own, while others prefer to work in a group. Which do you prefer and why?"

High-Scoring Response (Summary)

I personally prefer working in a group because it allows for a diverse range of perspectives. For instance, when I was working on my final university research paper, my group members pointed out errors in my data analysis that I had completely missed on my own. Furthermore, working in a group keeps me motivated and on schedule. Because I have to answer to my teammates, I am less likely to procrastinate, which makes me a much more efficient worker overall.

Pro-Tip: Don't try to say too much. Aim for 3–4 sentences. If you speak too quickly, you will make more mistakes. Keep a steady, natural pace.
