IELTS General Writing
Learn how to write IELTS General Training letters and essays with clear structure.
IELTS General Writing has two tasks: a letter in Task 1 and an essay in Task 2. You need clear organisation, suitable tone, accurate grammar and enough detail to answer the question fully.
IELTS General Writing Overview
The General Training writing test has two tasks. Task 2 is worth more than Task 1.
| Task | What you write | Minimum words | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Task 1 | A letter: formal, semi-formal or informal. | 150 words | About 20 minutes |
| Task 2 | An essay: opinion, discussion, problem-solution or advantages / disadvantages. | 250 words | About 40 minutes |
| Scoring | Task response, coherence, vocabulary, grammar and accuracy. | Both tasks matter | Task 2 has more weight |
Task 1: General Training Letter
In Task 1, you write a letter for a practical everyday situation.
1Choose the Right Tone
First decide whether the letter is formal, semi-formal or informal. The tone changes your greeting, phrases and ending.
- Formal: Dear Sir or Madam, I am writing to enquire about...
- Semi-formal: Dear Mr Brown, I am writing to let you know...
- Informal: Dear Tom, I hope you are well...
2Answer All Bullet Points
The question usually gives you three things to include. You must answer all of them clearly.
- Paragraph 1: Explain why you are writing.
- Paragraph 2: Give details about the situation.
- Paragraph 3: Make a request, suggestion or final point.
3Use Practical Letter Phrases
Good letter phrases help you write faster and more naturally.
- Complaint: I am writing to complain about...
- Request: I would be grateful if you could...
- Apology: I am sorry for any inconvenience caused.
- Invitation: I would be very pleased if you could join us.
Task 2: General Training Essay
Task 2 needs a clear argument, good paragraphing and relevant examples.
1Use a Clear Essay Structure
A simple structure is usually best. Do not make the essay too complicated.
- Introduction: Paraphrase the question and state your direction.
- Body 1: First main idea with explanation and example.
- Body 2: Second main idea with explanation and example.
- Conclusion: Summarise your answer clearly.
2Develop Your Ideas
IELTS essays need more than opinions. Each main idea should be explained and supported.
- Weak: Public transport is good.
- Better: Public transport can reduce traffic congestion because fewer people need to use private cars during rush hour.
3Use Linking Phrases Carefully
Linking phrases should help the reader follow your argument. Do not use too many.
- Adding: In addition, Furthermore, Another reason is...
- Contrasting: However, On the other hand, Nevertheless...
- Giving examples: For example, For instance, A clear example is...
- Concluding: Overall, In conclusion, For these reasons...
