ICAO Picture Description
ICAO Picture Description is an important part of ICAO Aviation English speaking practice. In this task, you usually look at an aviation-related picture and describe what you can see clearly, logically and accurately. You may need to describe aircraft, vehicles, weather, runway conditions, airport activity, technical problems or an unusual situation.
What happens in ICAO Picture Description?
You are shown a picture related to aviation and you must speak about it in a clear and organized way. The examiner is not only listening for vocabulary. They are also listening for fluency, pronunciation, structure, accuracy and your ability to explain what is happening.
- the location
- the weather
- the aircraft type or position
- vehicles and ground staff
- passengers or crew activity
- an incident or possible danger
- the sequence of events
- what might happen next
What the examiner wants to hear
A good ICAO picture description is not just a list of objects. You should describe the scene naturally and explain relationships between the different parts of the picture.
- a clear opening sentence
- logical organization
- aviation vocabulary
- clear verbs for actions and movement
- speculation where necessary
- simple but accurate grammar
- clear pronunciation
- continuous speech without long pauses
Simple structure for picture description
A useful method is to move from general to specific. Start with the big picture, then describe important details, and finish with the likely problem or outcome.
- 1. General overview: say what kind of scene it is
- 2. Main details: describe aircraft, vehicles, people and weather
- 3. Problem or focus: explain the unusual event or operational issue
- 4. Possible result: say what may happen next
Example opening phrases
- This picture shows an airport scene.
- In this image, we can see an aircraft on the runway.
- The picture appears to show a ground incident.
- This seems to be a situation during taxiing or landing.
- The main issue in the picture is on the left side near the aircraft.

Common ICAO picture topics

- emergency vehicles near an aircraft
- ground handling activity
- de-icing operations
- fuel truck or maintenance inspection
- passenger boarding or evacuation
- diversion or delay situation
- damaged aircraft or runway incident
Example picture description
This picture shows an airport emergency situation. In the centre of the image, there is a passenger aircraft stopped on the runway or taxiway. On the left side, I can see smoke coming from one of the engines, so there may be a technical problem or possibly a fire. Several emergency vehicles are approaching the aircraft, and it looks like the airport fire service is responding quickly. The weather seems clear, so visibility is probably not the main issue. In my opinion, the crew may have reported an engine problem after landing, and the aircraft has stopped for safety reasons. The next step will probably be an inspection, passenger assistance and possible closure of that part of the airport.
