TOEFL Writing: Essay Topics
Use these practice prompts to build your confidence for the Integrated and Academic Discussion tasks.
Task 1: Integrated Writing Prompts
The Economics of Renewable Energy
Reading: Explains that solar energy is the most viable path for residential energy, focusing on affordability, ease of installation, and low maintenance.
Lecture: The professor argues that solar is not yet the ideal solution, noting the limitations of battery storage technology, the environmental impact of manufacturing rare-earth metals for panels, and geographic variability in solar efficiency.
Corporate Governance and Remote Work
Reading: Presents three reasons why requiring employees to return to the physical office increases innovation: face-to-face brainstorming, stronger company culture, and clearer oversight.
Lecture: The speaker counters these points, arguing that innovation can happen digitally, culture is driven by values rather than proximity, and micromanagement (oversight) actually harms employee autonomy and output.
Task 2: Academic Discussion Prompts
The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education
Professor's Question: "As AI-generated content becomes more prevalent, should universities view this technology as a threat to critical thinking or as a powerful tool for academic efficiency?"
Classmate A: Argues that AI acts as a helpful tutor that democratizes information access.
Classmate B: Argues that students will rely on AI to generate essays, which bypasses the essential struggle of learning to think for oneself.
Urban Planning: Prioritizing Pedestrians vs. Vehicles
Professor's Question: "Should modern urban planning prioritize 'car-free' city centers to increase pedestrian safety and reduce pollution, or is this shift unfair to commuters who rely on automobiles for mobility?"
Classmate A: Supports car-free zones, noting that public health and safety must come before the convenience of drivers.
Classmate B: Argues that car-free policies hurt lower-income families who live in suburbs and rely on private cars for essential transit to work.
Effective Practice Strategy
- Focus on Logic: For Task 1, ensure you represent the lecture's refutation as a direct response to the reading's claims.
- Use Personal Evidence: For Task 2, aim to write at least one paragraph that uses a very specific, real-world example (like the Tokyo example provided in the writing samples).
- Check Word Count: Keep an eye on the word count—don't write too little, but don't spend time "fluffing" the essay with unnecessary adjectives.
