TOEFL Speaking Task 2 | Campus Situation Guide

TOEFL Speaking Task 2: Integrated (Campus Situation)

Task 2 tests your ability to synthesize information from a short reading passage and a listening conversation. You will read a proposal or announcement, listen to two students discussing it, and then summarize their reactions.

Preparation Time: 30 seconds

Speaking Time: 60 seconds

Task Structure

  • The Reading: A campus announcement (e.g., new policy, building renovation). Take notes on the Change and the two reasons provided for it.
  • The Listening: Two students discuss the change. One student will have a strong opinion (agree or disagree). Take notes on their stance and the two reasons they provide to support that stance.

Strategic Template

The university is planning to [state the change from the reading]. The reading provides two reasons for this: [reason 1] and [reason 2]. In the listening, the man/woman [agrees/disagrees] with this change. First, regarding the [reason 1], the speaker says that [explain speaker's point]. Second, as for the [reason 2], the speaker argues that [explain speaker's point]. For these reasons, the student is [in favor of/against] the proposal.

Pro-Tips for Task 2

  • Focus on the Student: The summary should be 80% about the conversation and only 20% about the reading passage.
  • Keep it Simple: You don't need to summarize the entire reading; just state the proposal and its two main points briefly.
  • Logical Flow: Use transitions like "On the other hand," "Furthermore," and "In addition" to connect your points clearly.
  • Note-Taking: Draw a line down your scratch paper. Left side for Reading (Change + 2 reasons), right side for Conversation (Stance + 2 reasons).
