ICAO Aircraft Picture Description
ICAO Aircraft Picture Description is an important speaking task in ICAO Aviation English practice. You may be shown a picture of an aircraft on the ground or in flight and asked to describe it clearly, logically and accurately. In this task, you need to explain the aircraft position, movement, condition and the operational situation around it.
What is ICAO Aircraft Picture Description?
In this task, you describe an aviation image with a strong focus on the aircraft itself. The examiner wants to hear more than simple object naming. You should describe what the aircraft is doing, where it is, what condition it is in and what may happen next.
- aircraft on the runway
- aircraft on the taxiway
- aircraft parked at the gate
- aircraft during takeoff or landing
- aircraft in flight
- aircraft with visible damage
- cargo aircraft activity
- helicopter operations
- aircraft with emergency vehicles nearby
- aircraft in unusual weather conditions
What the examiner wants to hear
A strong answer is organized and clear. You should describe the aircraft first, then add important details about the surroundings, the operation and any possible problem.
- a clear description of the aircraft
- aircraft position and movement
- visible condition of the aircraft
- details about the airport or airspace environment
- possible operational issue
- logical sequence
- likely next action
Simple structure for aircraft picture description

- 2. Position: say where the aircraft is
- 3. Movement or condition: explain what it is doing or what condition it is in

Example aircraft picture description
This picture shows a passenger aircraft at an airport. The aircraft is on the taxiway and appears to be moving slowly toward the runway. It looks like normal airport operations, and I cannot see any obvious damage to the aircraft. In the background, there are airport buildings and a few service vehicles, so this is probably a busy commercial airport. The weather seems clear, and visibility is good. In my opinion, the aircraft is preparing for departure and will probably continue taxiing until it receives clearance to line up or take off.
Language for cautious description
- The aircraft appears to be taxiing.
- It seems to be preparing for departure.
- The aircraft may have just landed.
- This could be a routine airport operation.
- There might be a minor delay.
- The crew will probably continue as instructed by ATC.
Mistakes to avoid
- only saying “There is a plane”
- not describing position or movement
- ignoring important details around the aircraft
- not mentioning operational context
- speaking too briefly
- using very complex grammar with mistakes
Practice ideas
