1. Why Follow a Structured DELTA Study Plan?

The Cambridge DELTA (Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) is an advanced qualification for experienced ELT professionals. Because DELTA requires deep theoretical knowledge, rigorous phonological/grammatical terminology, reflective lesson design, and academic research, a structured study roadmap is essential for passing all three independent modules.

• Modular Flexibility: Candidates can prepare and sit Modules 1, 2, and 3 separately or concurrently based on their teaching schedule.

Phase 1: Module 1 – Understanding Language, Methodology & Resources

Focus: Written examination (2 papers, 1.5 hours each) testing theoretical framework knowledge.

• Step 1 – Terminology & Concepts (Paper 1 Task 1): Build an exhaustive glossary of ELT terminology, phonemic symbols, discourse analysis terms, and testing concepts.
• Step 2 – Language Analysis (Paper 1 Task 2): Practice analyzing grammar, lexis, discourse, and phonology in authentic student text extracts.
• Step 3 – Coursebook & Material Evaluation (Paper 1 Task 5): Analyze ELT coursebook materials, evaluating underlying assumptions and pedagogical purpose.
• Step 4 – Test & Assessment Analysis (Paper 2 Task 1): Master test types (formative, summative, diagnostic, proficiency) and evaluation metrics (validity, reliability, impact).
• Step 5 – Timed Exam Past Papers: Complete past Cambridge DELTA Module 1 exam papers under strict time constraints.

Phase 2: Module 2 – Developing Professional Practice

Focus: Coursework coursework including 4 Language Systems/Skills Assignments (LSAs) and external teaching observation.

Phase 3: Module 3 – Extending Practice / ELT Management

Focus: Extended written assignment (4,500 words) on a specialist area or English Language Teaching management.

• Specialism Selection: Choose a specific focus area (e.g., Business English, Young Learners, EAP, Teaching Exam Classes, or ELT Management).
• Needs Analysis & Diagnostic Testing: Conduct a comprehensive diagnostic evaluation of a target group of learners.
• Syllabus Design: Construct a 20-hour tailored syllabus based on diagnostic findings, specifying aims, course materials, and methodology.
• Assessment Proposal: Design an end-of-course assessment framework to measure course effectiveness.
