English Level Tests
Find out your English level from A1 to C2 with EF SET, Linguaskill and the CEFR level converter, before you choose a course or an exam.
A level test tells you where you are now. It helps you choose the right course, pick an exam you can pass, and see how much progress you are making. Some level tests are free and informal; others give you an official result you can show an employer.
The Six CEFR Levels
Almost every level test and certificate in Europe reports its result on this scale: the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
| Level | Name | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| A1 | Beginner | Understand and use simple everyday phrases; introduce yourself |
| A2 | Elementary | Talk about familiar topics such as family, shopping and work in simple sentences |
| B1 | Intermediate | Deal with most travel situations; describe experiences and give short reasons |
| B2 | Upper intermediate | Discuss a wide range of topics fluently; understand the main ideas of complex texts |
| C1 | Advanced | Use English flexibly for study and work; understand long, demanding texts |
| C2 | Proficient | Understand almost everything with ease; express yourself precisely and naturally |
Most universities ask for B2 or C1; many jobs ask for B1 or B2.
