Mini Test 2: Listening & Synthesis
This test focuses on Task 3 and Task 4 (Academic Synthesis). Focus on your note-taking efficiency.
Task 3: Academic Concept
Reading: "Biological Invasions." An invasive species is a non-native organism that causes ecological or economic harm after being introduced to a new environment.
Lecture Scenario: The professor discusses the "Brown Tree Snake" in Guam. Originally introduced via military cargo ships, it has decimated native bird populations because the birds had no evolved defenses against this specific type of predator.
Preparation: 20 seconds | Speaking: 60 seconds
Task 4: Academic Lecture Summary
Lecture Scenario: The professor explains "Cognitive Dissonance." He defines it as the mental discomfort experienced when holding two conflicting beliefs. He provides two examples:
1. Someone who values health but continues to smoke (adjusting their view by saying "it helps me relax").
2. A consumer who buys an expensive car and then justifies it by focusing only on its safety features while ignoring the high cost.
Preparation: 20 seconds | Speaking: 60 seconds
Focus Areas:
- Note-Taking: Did you write down the specific examples used by the professors?
- Synthesis: Did you bridge the reading definition to the lecture example in Task 3?
- Structure: Did you maintain an objective, academic tone without using "I"?
